Draco and Hermione were meant to be enemies, but strange things happen in a time of war. They will discover, together, how to defeat The Dark Lord once and for all. Is this the greatest love story Hogwarts has ever seen?

Hogwarts castle and grounds: Hogwarts Castle was no longer the incredible magical building it had once been, and students no longer explored the many towers and turrets it had to offer, and they were now used for storage of magical artefacts and weaponry. It had once been home to Hogwarts School of Witch Craft and Wizardry and the many students and teachers that had attended. Now it was a safe haven for any witch or wizard – or other magical creatures- who wished to escape The Dark Lord and had been turned into a small community in itself with many enchanted tents being set up around different parts of the grounds, they were mostly located on quidditch pitch which had ended up being the central hub of their mini town.
Many sentry towers had been crafted along the fence line of the castle grounds and even extended into the Forbidden forest; magical enchantments had also been placed around the castle borders to keep everyone who was inside safe and those who were unwelcome out. There was even a market place set up down near Hagrid’s Cabin where people could still get a sense of freedom and buy any luxuries they might like that their staples didn’t include. The green house had been turned into a farm as such, the greenhouse itself grew necessary fruits and vegetables and the court yard outside penned cows, sheep, chickens and goats, and there were even a few pigs and other unusual animals available.
In short, Hogwarts castle and grounds had been transformed into a self-sustaining community which relied upon the DA (Dumbledore’s Army) to keep it safe and secure from Lord Voldermort’s attacks and attempts to gain access via tricks and spies. DA guards were always posted in the sentry towers to keep a watchful eye beyond the castle grounds and forbidden forest. They had even crafted one in the middle of the lake, and there was even a bottom room on the sentry that allowed someone to keep watch beneath the water.
Hogwarts Castle and its grounds had been this way for the past four years, even since what some had assumed would be the final battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldermort. And Harry, who had quickly realized that if they didn’t do something quickly to protect the wizarding world from Voldermort’s wrath had come up with the idea to keep everyone who was willing inside Hogwarts and keep Voldermort out until they could come up with a plan to truly defeat him. A lot of the other schools around the world had followed suit in order to protect the new generation of their students and families, and Hogwarts traded with them when they needed to.
But from the many who had secured themselves inside the grounds, there were few left, Lord Voldermort had the upper hand and never gave them a chance to regroup, it was constant and brutal and everyone was becoming wary and their hope dwindling with every day that past. Even Harry Potter was having a hard time believing that what he was doing was the right thing, because without this protection all those who opposed The Dark Lord would be slaughtered and there would soon be nothing left but Voldermort himself.
“Sir, there’s a family of three outside the gates, they’re hurt pretty badly” Padma Patil panted, a sign that she had just run up the sentry stairs in quite a hurry to pass on this urgent message, her thick ebony pony tail swishing from side to side. Someone else quickly followed seconds later and stepped up onto the sentry floor beside her, she too was panting and had doubled over slightly to catch her breath. “It’s probably a trick, Sir. Like last time.” The second female quickly pointed out, her dark locks pulled back into a tight plait behind her neck.
“Maybe, Chang, but what if it’s not and they just need sanctuary? Bring them in.” The commanding tone was thick and one that didn’t want to be questioned, if the two women didn’t know him any better they would have backed off with no argument and done what he’d said. “But, Sir –Harry! It could be The Dark Lord’s forces again, remember last time-“ It was Cho again, cautious Cho Chang who now went about questioning everything he did or said because only a few weeks ago she had lost her closest friend, Marietta Edgecombe, after they had let outsiders in through their only protection – the gates that now completely surrounded the castle and grounds beyond of Hogwart’s.
“Get them inside the gates now! Do not argue with me, ever!” Harry Potter quickly cut her off, his frustrations with her questioning his every move ever growing and where he had once liked Cho Chang and had struck up a conversation with her easily, he couldn’t stand her now that she was so edgy and frightened. The two young women jumped at the harshness in his voice, this was not the Harry Potter they had once known even a few weeks ago. He would never usually snap at his guards like that, they were a team, they worked together, and they made decisions together. That had all changed now it seemed, and Padma and Cho nodded in silence, bowing their heads slightly before they backed away and continued down the stairs they had run up a minute ago.
“Well that was a bit harsh,” Someone else had been standing on the sentry tower with Harry when the two women had arrived, but he had remained silent the whole time, his expression clear of any emotions as he’d stared out across the castle grounds and towards the large towering gates, the only entry and the only exit into the now secure castle grounds; but now he spoke not afraid of Harry’s venom. “Cho had a point you know,” The other male continued, standing two extra feet taller than the other, his nose turned down slightly to look at Harry now.
Harry turned sharply, his green eyes – just like his mother’s- glared sharply through his round black framed glasses and now familiar scowl appeared on his lips. “Shut it, Malfoy.” The dark haired male snapped, his wand gripped tightly in his hand, though Draco knew he wouldn’t use it he still took a small step back. His own cold grey eyes narrowed and he pursed his lips together unhappily. “Have we gone back to that now, Potter?” He asked, keeping his tone free of insult and calm as he could; it didn’t take Draco Malfoy much to get riled up as so many had discovered, there was still always a need in the back of his mind to defend the person he now was, as though he kept thinking that no one would truly believe he had changed.
They were all still sceptical of Draco’s presence, even after four years of serving by Harry’s side and helping the witches and wizards – and other magical folk- who took refuge inside the gates of Hogwart’s - which had once been a promising school that tutored it’s former students to the highest level of education-, they still chose to believe that he would betray them one day. And to their shock and horror Harry –their leader and protector- had given him the title of third in command, after Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom of course.
What was once left of Dumbledore’s Army had become guards and protectors of the castle and grounds they now called home, defending off any and all Death Eater attacks and had also become tutors themselves, training up those old enough to fight with them if they chose to. However, a lot of them were now gone, killed in the many battles they’d fought to protect the only semblance of freedom they had left. Ron Weasley and Marietta Edgecombe, along with two others, had been the latest victims of war. And Harry had been devastated over losing his closest friend, and blamed himself for not taking better precautions when letting outsiders into their home.
Instead of letting in an elderly couple who looked as though they hadn’t bathed or eaten in days, he had let in two Death Eaters who’d been glamoured and had proceeded to slaughter those closest before being killed themselves. Ron had been the one to open the gates to let them in, being Harry’s first in charge he always wanted to be in the thick of it, and he had been the first to go taken completely by surprise. There had been nothing anyone could do to prevent it as it had happened so fast, by the time Harry had realized what was going and apparate down to the gates to help fight, his best friend was gone.
Now he was just a bitter version of his other self, reigning in a tighter command and not taking lightly to those who slacked off or wanted to question him. Though he was no the evil being that Voldermort was, and there was no vicious punishment for slackers or those who didn’t follow orders, except Harry’s own harsh telling’s off. Everyone who was now living in the safety of Hogwart’s grounds were made up of ex-students and ex-students of a few other schools around the globe, there were only a handful of adults, and even rarer, one or two families. All the adults, in their efforts to save their children, had often offered themselves up for the front line when a battle was about to take place and often they didn’t make it.
And Harry had been left with the responsibility to protect everyone, guide them and lead them and instead of enjoying a normal life of that of a twenty-one year old male, he was instead making sure everyone had enough food and water, that the perimeter around the castle was always secure and scoured over battle plans in preparation for the next wave of Voldermort’s Army. An army that was ever growing whilst there’s seemed to dwindle with every passing year. They had once had thousands, students, teachers, mothers and fathers, and anyone else had been willing to stand and fight. Even the numbers in elf’s, dwarfs, goblins, giants and ogre’s, centaurs and other magical creatures alike were dwindling away little by little.
Perhaps this knowledge – and also the loss of a close friend- had made Harry turn cold and shattered his optimism, it had only been a matter of time, Draco knew it would come to this soon, there was only so much one man could take. But he’d never give up believing that Harry wasn’t the right wizard to lead them, he would be the only one who could them start afresh when this war – that never seemed to end- was over. Though they were not necessarily close friends, the two had set aside their differences and come together to help what was left of Britain’s wizarding community, they were friendly enough and Harry had learnt very quickly that Draco would speak his mind when and where he wanted, that his opinions wouldn’t go unheard. They had even stopped referring to each other as ‘Potter’ and ‘Malfoy’ and were on a first name basis, though both tended to resort back their old ways when they were angry or frustrated.
His white blonde hair as always was slicked back from his face, revealing his sharp almost regal features; his tall slender body was accentuated with slightly toned muscles underneath his dark green robes, a sign that he kept psychically busy and was not the lazy prat he could have turned out to be. No, instead Draco now stood with his head held high, proud that he had chosen his own path in life, even if it meant sacrificing the Malfoy riches and immunity status regarding Voldermort. Now that he had fought alongside his ex-classmates in their plight to restore the world back to how it should be, Draco could not see himself anywhere else.
“No, Draco. We are not back to that again, I’m just –“ Harry expelled a breath before he continued, “Tired.” He finished though Draco raised a brow, he had a feeling that wasn’t what he’d been going to say - nor was ‘sorry’, but he didn’t point it out. “You haven’t slept in days, you’re going to run yourself into the ground soon,” Draco said instead and watched the other man nod slowly and run his fingers tiredly through his always messy black hair. And yes there was a hint of concern etched into Draco’s words, he was no beyond emotions anymore or displays of affection but he tried to keep as aloof as he could, especially if anyone else was around. It was just a defensive mechanism he supposed, if he remained aloof and appeared unconcerned he could carry on pretending that this war was not affecting him.
“I’m alright. I can’t sleep anyway. I’m of better use while I’m awake.” Harry explained with a soft sigh and turned away from the blonde, essentially ending their conversation. Draco, who knew Harry might think he would be of better use staying awake then sleeping for one night, was aware that if Harry didn’t get some sleep soon he would end up being no use to them at all, and probably when they needed him the most. “I’m sending Hermione up to talk some sense into you,” Draco announced and disappeared down the sentry stairs before the other man could argue.
Hermione Granger was the only witch that could talk any sense into Harry, she too was still grieving the loss of Ron - they had started dating officially two years ago, though there had always been something there between them-, but still had her right mind about her and understood that life just had to go on, especially in times like these. However Draco wasn’t looking forward to seeing Hermione, even after the four years of living on the castle grounds together and finally fighting for the same cause they still didn’t get along. For some reason Draco just couldn’t bring himself to be nice to her, although he refrained from calling her names and starting arguments.
Draco was just crossing the grounds, the sentry Harry and he and been posted at was in the middle of the old quidditch pitch and was the central guard tower that overlooked the mini town that had been created below, when he saw Neville Longbottom walking the opposite direction towards Draco. He had a serious look on his face, but then again these days Neville always had a serious look on his face, gone was the toothy grin he knew the boy well for. “Neville,” Draco greeted but held a hand up to prevent the male from going any further, the male stopped, looked at Draco’s hand and pushed past him. Neville was another who still didn’t like Draco, probable to do with the fact that Draco’s aunt Bellatrix had tortured and sent his parents insane, but Draco was trying with Neville; they were both Harry’s best duellers and they needed to get along if they were going to be any good in next battle together –so far they had not been in the same squadron as each other.
Draco reacted quickly not happy that Neville had ignored him completely, and grabbed the other man by the scruff of his robes just as he stepped onto the stairs jerking him backwards but still keeping a tight grip on his scruff so he didn’t stumble. “Neville.” Draco greeted again and continued to hold him in place for a little longer. “It’s rude to ignore people.” The blonde pointed out and let go of his hold on the other male as Neville tried to free himself of Draco’s grip. “You shouldn’t bother Harry now; he’s being stretched too far, whatever it is we can work it out.” Draco explained and even tried to offer a smile, though it came as more of a grimace.
“I’m not working with you Malfoy, touch me again and I’ll blow you into oblivion.” Neville bit out through gritted teeth, a vicious sneer appearing on his lips. Draco frowned, not appreciating the seriousness in Neville’s voice. “Go up those stairs, Longbottom and I’ll curse you so bad you’ll be spewing slugs for a week.” Draco said returning the threat, quirking a brow in an ‘I’m not joking’ manner.
“Seriously?” It was someone else this time, a familiar shimmer of red hair appeared from the opposite side of the sentry, Ginny Weasley looked as though she had spent all night awake, she’d been posted on the sentry closest to the castle so she probably had been up all night. “You two need to get over this…” She rolled her eyes and her soft face turned up a smile in an effort to make peace between the two. She looked like she’d been crying again, for her brother most likely, but it was probably for her entire family as now she was the only one left. “Whatever this is.” She finished with another roll of her eyes.
Both males kept their mouths shut tight, not wanting their argument to upset Ginny. That would be a bad idea. Her wrath was something to look out for, but it was Harry’s wrath if anyone upset the woman at the moment that would trump anything Ginny could dish out. “Hello Ginny. If you’re going to see Harry can you try and convince him to go home and get some sleep?” Draco broke the silence, ignoring his issues with Neville for the time being. Ginny glanced up at the sentry tower and then looked back at Draco, a small sigh escaped her lips and then she nodded. “I’ll do my best,” She answered and before she disappeared up the stairs she gave them a little wink and grin.
They both watched Ginny disappear and then, having the same grim thought, looked back at each other. Draco thought Neville was about to say something, apologise perhaps for his rude behaviour but instead he narrowed his eyes at Draco and then quickly stormed off in the direction Ginny Weasely had come from. “Git,” Draco said beneath his breath before he too took off in long graceful strides in the opposite direction.

Romance your ego for a while,
Come on, give it a try
